I was tasked with creating a 32-page bound book using only text, with no images, based on Italo Calvino’s If On a Winter’s Night a Traveller.
The project required me to focus on the visual qualities of text within a book format, particularly in the context of a traditional codex. Language relies on contrast to convey meaning throughout the book. I explored how factors such as scale, orientation, and colour contribute to the book’s structure and significance. To represent different voices, I employed varied typographic choices. The “moments” referred to are the spreads within the book, where I adjusted the duration of these moments—whether describing real or imagined events, or external versus internal experiences—by manipulating pace and rhythm, density and sparsity, and concealment and revelation. The central question was what happens between the spreads as the pages are turned.
